In a Long Term Game you don’t have to keep the game open. Continuity Error can send a notification
to your phone or computer when it’s time to write, when voting opens, when you have 5 minutes left,
and when the game ends. Tapping the notification opens the game.
What you need
An account, and to be signed in on the device.
The game opened with a secure https:// address. Browsers don’t allow notifications on plain
http:// addresses. If yours starts with http://, ask the server owner.
Notifications turned on on each device separately, for example once on your phone and once on your PC.
Windows and Mac computers
Works in Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome and Firefox. You don’t need to install anything.
Open the game and sign in.
Click Turn on notifications. It’s under Long Term Games on the home page, and in the Notifications panel inside any Long Term Game.
When your browser asks, click Allow.
When the button changes to Turn off, you’re all set.
No pop-up appeared? Microsoft Edge doesn’t show a pop-up by default. Instead it puts a small
bell 🔔 at the right end of the address bar, labeled “Notifications blocked”. Chrome sometimes does the same.
Click the bell and choose Allow. The button on the page then changes to Turn off.
(To get normal pop-ups in Edge, go to edge://settings/content/notifications and turn off
Quiet notification requests.)
Blocked it by mistake?
Click the lock or View site information icon at the left end of the address bar.
Next to Notifications, choose Allow.
Reload the page and click Turn on notifications again.
Turned on, but nothing arrives?
Windows: open Settings → System → Notifications. Make sure notifications are on, your browser
(Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome) is switched on in the list, and Do not disturb is off.
Mac: open System Settings → Notifications, choose your browser, and turn on Allow notifications.
Check that a Focus mode isn’t silencing it.
Your browser has to be running. On a computer, notifications only arrive while the browser is open,
unless you let it keep running in the background:
Edge: Settings → System and performance → turn on Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed.
Chrome: Settings → System → turn on Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed.
Optional: install it as an app
This isn’t needed for notifications on a computer, but it gives Continuity Error its own window and taskbar or dock icon.
Edge: click the App available icon in the address bar, or open the ⋯ menu → Apps → Install this site as an app.
Chrome: click the install icon at the right end of the address bar, or open the ⋮ menu → Cast, save, and share → Install page as app.
iPhone or iPad
Needs iOS 16.4 or later. Apple only allows notifications from sites installed on the Home Screen, so install it first:
Open the game in Safari.
Tap the Share button (the square with an arrow pointing up). Depending on your Safari layout, you may need to tap ⋯ first.
Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen. If you don’t see it, tap Edit Actions at the bottom of the list and add it.
If there’s an Open as Web App switch, leave it on. Tap Add.
Open Continuity from your Home Screen, not from Safari.
Sign in, tap Turn on notifications, then tap Allow.
Not getting them? Open Settings → Notifications → Continuity and make sure Allow Notifications is on, and check that a Focus mode isn’t silencing it.
Android
Open the game in Chrome.
Tap the ⋮ menu at the top right.
Tap Install app (on some phones it says Add to Home screen), then Install.
Open Continuity from your home screen or app list.
Sign in, tap Turn on notifications, then tap Allow.
Installing is optional on Android, since notifications also work straight from Chrome, but it makes the game easier to find.
Not getting them? Open Settings → Apps → Chrome (or Continuity) → Notifications and make sure they’re allowed.
